Best new breweries of 2014
This year, 13 states reached the century mark: more than 100 breweries each. It’s gotta be a daunting endeavor to open a brewery in that market, and yet, according to the Brewers Association, an average of 1.5 new breweries opens its doors every single day in this country. That’s a lot of beer. Some of it’s good, some of it’s great. We found eight new breweries that are out of this world.

It’s the end of Beer VS Beer’s first calendar year and I feel like I need to wrap it up somehow. However, I’d prefer not to drop another Top X Beers of 2014 list into that already massive ocean. Instead, I want to tell you about some of the trends I’ve seen in craft beer this year and about the best beers that exemplify those trends.

The past year was the most dynamic in the history of American craft brewing. The combination of entrepreneurial spirit, creative energy and consumer thirst means this will be another explosive year for American beer makers. Columbia? Taken. Mississippi? Taken. Sacramento? El Niño? Marlin? Grizzly? Sorry, they’re all taken. Virtually every large city, notable landscape feature, creature and weather pattern of North America — as well as myriad other words, concepts and images — has been snapped up and trademarked as the name of either a brewery or a beer. For newcomers to the increasingly crowded industry of more than 3,000 breweries, finding names for beers, or even themselves, is increasingly hard to do without risking a legal fight.
